What gets measured gets done. In other words, a measurement system determines the actions your people will undertake. Managers need to understand that the design of KPIs and targets should not be taken lightly. I have witnessed too many organizations defining KPIs and setting targets exclusively from one perspective (usually the sales and total revenue perspective) but neglecting the whole range of other perspectives. The consequence in a majority of these cases has been suboptimization ending in poor overall results. Beware of quick fixes when it comes to the development of a measurement system!
